Press release -For immediate release-

A group of organizations has been given the responsibility for completing local consultations on systemic discrimination and racism in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean

Saguenay, September 26, 2017 – The regional branch of the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) has been given responsibility for organizing local consultations as part of the Consultation sur la discrimination systémique et le racisme au Québec, in partnership with the Groupe de recherche en intervention régionale (GRIR – UQAC), Portes ouvertes sur le Lac, Cible-Action (SEMO) as well as the Collectif Coexister au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

Local consultations will be held throughout the region, and will take the form of group meetings and individual interviews. The regional group will do everything in its power to promote consultations that allow for exchange and sharing, while ensuring that the confidentiality of the identity of those who agree to take part is preserved. All interventions will be documented in accordance with scientific research standards, and compiled in a confidential report that will be forwarded to the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse du Québec (CDPDJ).

The tight schedule demanded by the Consultation on Systemic Discrimination and Racism in Quebec presents a real challenge, given that the consultations will have to be completed by mid-October, and the final report submitted a month later.

With this in mind, the regional group is launching an appeal to the region’s population and to the various organizations working with racialized people or those who have experienced systemic discrimination, to help recruit individuals who would like to share their experiences or suggest solutions for the local consultations. Organizations can also suggest names. Interested parties should contact Elizabeth Muñoz (for Saguenay: cti.iwc.slsj@gmail.com) or Valérie Savard (for Lac-Saint-Jean: liaisonentreprises@portesouvertessurlelac.org).

While expressing their satisfaction that the project, submitted to the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion (MIDI) and the CDPDJ, has been selected for the SLSJ, the five partners who will lead this consultation in the region seek to provide assurance about the quality of the work required for such a study. Professor Jorge Frozzini, head of the regional grouping, believes that the diversity of the partners, their independence from political parties and their knowledge of the field will be of great help in ensuring that the process runs smoothly.

The representatives of the partner organizations at the local consultations are :

Dr. Jorge Frozzini (CTI)
Valérie Savard (Portes ouvertes)
Hervé Stecq. Ph. D. (GRIR-UQAC)
Marie-Noëlle Pilote (Cible-Action – SEMO)
Dr. Jocelyn Girard (Coexister)
