An income allowance, regardless of status

Call Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: (613) 992-4211

Call your Member of Parliament:

https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en

The government announced income support measures last week, and the corresponding legislation will be debated tomorrow. The details – who will qualify, how much and for how long – will be decided at that time. Now is the time to ensure that no one is left behind. You must act immediately.

When you call, remind the Prime Minister and your Member of Parliament:

*It’s the workers in agriculture, food, warehousing, delivery and housekeeping, contract workers, app-based workers, bus and cab drivers, health care workers and many others who make sure our basic needs are met. It’s essential that all these people receive income support. Many of them are migrants, and the programs announced could exclude them.

*The programs announced by the government will not allow us to have money in time to pay the rent, and the amounts promised are very small. We need a living wage for everyone in the country, including migrants who arrive and are quarantined, and we need it now.

* Many people are not eligible for employment insurance or programs managed by the Canada Revenue Agency, such as homeless, undocumented and unemployed people, migrant, temporary and precarious workers, people with disabilities, cash-payers and many others. Right now, we need income support for everyone.

*Remind them that everyone needs full access to healthcare and community support, including housing. A real response to the crisis must include ending detentions and evictions, and granting permanent status to all. To find out more: www.MigrantRights.ca/Covid19

We particularly encourage migrant, undocumented, poor, racialized and employed people to make appeals. Politicians need to hear from those most affected by the current situation. Every voice counts. Let us know and let your friends know you called by tagging @MigrantRightsCA on facebook, twitter or instagram.
