On September 12, 2023, the Immigrant Workers Centre took part in the public hearings concerning immigration planning in Quebec for the period 2024-2027. The IWC’s intervention began with the testimony of Grace Meyanwi Anye, member of the Women’s Committee, who presented the concrete impacts of restrictive migration policies on the lives of migrants. Then, three organizers shared the floor to criticize the orientations proposed by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ). In particular, we wanted to criticize the fact that they do not take into account whatsoever temporary workers, even though their numbers already far exceed the number of permanent residents received each year. As a result, there are several blind spots in the proposed guidelines. We believe that the CAQ’s proposals will also add to the already numerous barriers to permanent residency for temporary workers. We are also critical of speeches to the effect that French is in decline in Quebec and that the province does not have the capacity to welcome more immigrants.
CTTI’s positions on these issues were detailed in a brief submitted to the National Assembly. It is available here.
