May Day: Confronting Inequality and Rising Expenses

On May 1st, in Montreal, we united in solidarity on the streets, to raise our voices against the escalating cost of living, which disproportionately affects the most vulnerable members of our society. As inflation soars, the wealthiest individuals and corporations exploit the situation, amassing even greater profits at the expense of the working class.

Many workers face the harsh reality of stagnant wages amidst skyrocketing prices for essential goods and services. It is crucial that we come together as a community, amplifying the voices of workers to ensure their demands for fair compensation and better working conditions are heard.

Inflation leaves no one untouched, from migrant workers, students, seniors, the unemployed, single-parent families, to people living on their own and the working class. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting our ability to access nutritious food, secure affordable housing.

The May Day march served as a platform for workers to present their demands to various levels of government and companies. These include calls for a higher minimum wage, and the enforcement of occupational health and safety measures.

The IWC-CTI was one of the organizers and participants in the Coalition du 1er mai, which coordinated the march. This diverse alliance comprises unions, community organizations, and student groups, all united in the pursuit of social justice, equality, and a better future for all.
