Leduc Urges Investigation into Amazon’s Working Conditions

Alexandre Leduc Urges Minister of Labour to Address Concerns Raised by Amazon Workers, Delegation Meets in Parliament

At National Assembly on Thursday in Quebec city, Alexandre Leduc, the Labor Critic for the Second Opposition Group, Québec solidaire; has addressed, the ongoing concerns surrounding the working conditions at Amazon warehouses in Quebec. Leduc called upon the Minister of Labour, Jean Boulet, to take immediate action and launch an investigation into the alleged violations of Quebec labor laws by the multinational corporation.

Highlighting the importance of worker safety and fair treatment, Mr. Leduc emphasized that Amazon’s work methods, imported from the United States, do not align with Quebec’s regulations. He described the working environment within the warehouses as a “wound factory,” expressing serious concerns about health and safety standards not being adequately addressed.

Drawing attention to a petition signed by over 7,000 individuals, Leduc and his team recently met with Amazon workers, particularly in Montreal, at the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC-CTI), to understand the challenges they face on a daily basis.

In the press briefing, Leduc reiterated the need for Minister Boulet to become more involved in the Amazon file and take decisive steps to address the workers’ demands. He urged the Minister to meet with the affected workers, as he and his colleague Gabriel did a few weeks ago, to gain a firsthand understanding of their reality and the challenges they encounter within the warehouses.

Following Mr. Leduc’s address, the Minister of Labour,Jean Boulet, held a meeting in Parliament with a delegation from the Amazon Workers Committee in Montreal. The workers presented their demands for an investigation into the repeated violations of labor rights by Amazon.

The meeting between the Minister and the Amazon Workers Committee served as a crucial platform for the workers to voice their concerns directly to the government. They emphasized the urgency of the situation and the necessity for immediate action to address the labor rights violations.

The Minister assured the delegation that their demands would be taken seriously Boulet expressed her commitment to upholding labor rights and stated that the government would do everything within its power to ensure fair and safe working conditions for all employees in Quebec.

As the opposition Labor Critic, Leduc welcomed the meeting between the Minister and the Amazon Workers Committee, viewing it as a step in the right direction. He expressed hope that the investigation would shed light on any potential violations and result in necessary measures to rectify the situation.

The ball is now in the court of the Minister of Labour to follow through on his commitment and deliver concrete actions to address the concerns raised by the workers.

The collective efforts of the two members of National Assembly Gabriel Nadeau Dubois, Alexandre Leduc, and the Amazon Workers Committee, and concerned individuals who signed the petition have brought the issue of Amazon’s working conditions to the forefront of public discourse.

Scapegoating Migrants Won’t Solve a Systemic Crisis

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s call for a “very hard cap” on immigration is both misleading and harmful. Blaming newcomers for housing shortages and youth unemployment serves to distract from the real culprits: decades of neoliberal economic policy and an unregulated housing market dominated by speculative interests. The crisis is not about too many people—it’s about a system built to serve profits, not people. Migrant workers are not causing the housing... Read more →
