Demonstration in Front of Trudeau’s Office: Unemployment Insurance Reform Demanded

We were in front of Justin Trudeau’s office this noon to demand unemployment insurance reform. Years after we were promised reform, we’re still at a standstill. Meanwhile, the unemployed continue to live in precarious conditions on just 55% of their income. It’s criminal!

Here are a few passages from today’s speeches:

“We want the threshold of hours worked to be lowered to 350h or 13 weeks, and the benefit rate to be at least 70% for a minimum of 35 weeks. The government is aware of our demands.

– Michael, co-coordinator of the Mouvement autonome et solidaire des sans-emploi

“Imagine pouring your heart and soul into your job, only to suddendly lose it and realize you can’t get the support you need. Right now, that’s the harsh reality for 58% of workers and it’s just unacceptable. Consider our members at the Immigrant workers centre, who have become part of a growing community of precarious workers with no access to employement insurrance ”

– Ibrahim, community organizer at Iwc-Cti
