The Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC-CTI) joined community organizations in calling for urgent government action following the release of the Quebec coroner’s report into the death of Manjeet Singh, an unhoused migrant who died in Parc-Extension earlier this year.
Speaking after the report’s release, Gaurav Sharma, an organizer with the Immigrant Workers Centre, said Singh’s death was not an isolated tragedy but the result of systemic failures that continue to leave unhoused people without the support they need. According to the Montreal Gazette, Sharma said Singh, a 42-year-old migrant and father of two, was found alone in a Parc-Extension park during the winter and warned that more lives could be lost unless governments significantly expand housing and community services. As reported by the Montreal Gazette, Sharma stressed that many unhoused people in Parc-Extension are migrants and low-income residents who face growing barriers to accessing safe housing, healthcare, and social services. He called on all levels of government to increase investments in permanent affordable housing, outreach programs, mental health services, and stable funding for community organizations working on the front lines. Community organizations emphasized that the coroner’s findings should serve as a wake-up call. Without meaningful public investment and coordinated action, they warned, preventable deaths among unhoused people will continue.
The Immigrant Workers Centre stands with community organizations in demanding that everyone—regardless of immigration status or income—has access to safe housing, dignity and the support necessary to live in security.
